A Song A Week 25: The Bad Felt – ABCs of the Swamp

June 25th, 2010

It’s time for another Bad Felt song, and here one is. This song ended up very different than I originally pictured it, but I’m pretty happy with it. The lyrics are deceptively difficult, but Bren still managed to get a good final take in less tries than it took me to do serviceable vocals for a demo.

A Song A Week 24: Kristen Wiig – Champion (The Nemesis A Capella Remix)

June 18th, 2010

Last week’s remix was pretty much what I expected to do when I decided to do a remix for the contest. This week’s was a last minute decision. When I got all the files for the remix, they included samples of Kristen Wiig beatboxing, making noises, and saying different things. I figured there was no point letting all those samples go to waste, and put together an a capella remix.

A Song A Week 23: Kristen Wiig – Champion (The Nemesis 8-bit Remix)

June 11th, 2010

This is a remix of the song Champion by Kristen Wiig, from the movie MacGruber for a remix contest on Stereogum. I made this version using three different 8-bit VSTs in FL Studio, and also did another version which I will post next week. Big thanks to Matt Talbot of the Honorable Mentions for figuring out the tempo and chord progression, and for sending me the wav files for the remix. Speaking of whom… the Honorable Mentions did their own remix of the song as well.

A Song A Week 22: The Hitmaker Algorithm – Sad Song Redux

June 4th, 2010

Many of you have probably already heard the songs I did for The Hitmaker Algorithm, but if not you can hear the original three songs on myspace. The Hitmaker Algorithm is a character in my comic The Ballad of YFB, which is in turn based on the upcoming tow knee chavez album. The Hitmaker Algorithm/ YFB split EP serves as a companion to the album, and songs related to each (or different versions of songs from the EP) will appear on the album.
This song was originally meant to be part of the album, but about a month ago we decided to cut it because it doesn’t work with the flow of the album, and isn’t really necessary for the plot of the album. I cut the time down some from the original, but it’s still the longest song I’ve ever recorded vocals for. The music is the same as the original version, but with new lyrics involving the plot. There are actually four vocal tracks: a clean track and three different vocoders to make the voice roboty.

A Song A Week 21: The Bad Felt – I Want a Monster to Be My Friend

May 28th, 2010

New Bad Felt song… not much to say about it. Once again I’m very thankful that Bren is part of this group, since the songs are always a hundred times better when I hear his vocals on them. My favorite part is when Bren sounds like he himself is the monster.
