A Song A Week 30: The Bad Felt – I’m Sad Because I’m Happy

July 30th, 2010

I was explaining the concept behind The Bad Felt to a friend the other day, and told her that we tend to pick darker songs from Sesame Street. She was surprised that there were any dark songs on Sesame Street. I told her that Count songs and Grouch songs tend to work the best. This is a Grouch song.

A Song A Week 29: The Hitmaker Algorithm – Search and Destroy (Iggy and the Stooges cover)

July 25th, 2010

I liked the sound of the electronic cover of Carbona not Glue so much, that I decided to retoractively call it a Hitmaker Algorithm song, and do a whole Hitmaker Algorithm album of classic punk covers. This will also come in handy when the baby is born, and I need to mostly do songs on autopilot. This is another song I’d been wanting to cover for a while, so this was a good excuse to finally do it. I have a few other songs in mind, but I’m looking for requests of other songs people would like to hear me do.

A Song A Week 28: The Nemesis – You’re Gonna Die (A Love Song)

July 16th, 2010

This song comes off a little jokey, but it’s actually really sincere. This has been one of my biggest fears for almost as long as I’ve been married.

Also, not including The Bad Felt, this is the first song I’ve recorded guitars for since May! What?!?

A Song A Week 27: The Nemesis – Too Hot to Rock

July 9th, 2010

Between the holiday on Monday and jury duty on Wednesday, this has been a really short and weird week for me. I almost forgot I needed to start a song yesterday. Also, as the song explains, it’s been really hot here the last few days.
This ended up a lot closer to last week’s song than I expected to do any time soon. It’s all original music and vocals, but still pretty similar on a couple levels.

A Song A Week 26: The Nemesis – Funeral

July 2nd, 2010

As some of you already know, I flew down to California last weekend and attended my grandfather’s funeral on Tuesday. This is kind of a sound collage, combining the Hail Mary prayer from the rosary service, Ave Maria from the funeral, and Taps from the burial. I wish I could have actually recorded the priest reciting the Hail Mary. He had a big, dramatic voice. I could only find one usable recitation on youtube, which I then looped and distorted. I found sheet music for Ave Maria and Taps, then transposed them to the same key and programmed them in FL Studio. This is pretty different from anything I’ve done before… hopefully I’ll bring the rock again next week.

This song also marks the halfway point for the Song a Week project. It’s going by pretty quick, and I’ve actually managed to stay on top of it while still working on other music projects. I guess Virb is going to stop being a free service soon, so I’ll have to find somewhere else that will let me embed music here for free. Any suggestions?
